King Charles III Honours of Scotland
It has been a great privilege to announce that Joanna Gill was commissioned by His Majesty King Charles III to compose a new Scottish folk-song as part of the Honours of Scotland ceremony which took place on 5th July 2023 at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Her work “A Song of Thanksgiving and Dedication” was composed as a tribute to Aberdeen University chancellor Queen Camilla and showcased the Doric language. This song was performed at the ceremony by mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Ayoub sisters and can be watched on BBC iplayer here or listened to on BBC Sounds or in the clip below.
It was the first time that Doric has been sung at an Honours of Scotland service.
“It is a huge honour and privilege to be asked to write the music for this special Scottish folk-song and a real thrill to be inspired by my home country for such a wonderful occasion.”
The Honours of Scotland ceremony was broadcast on BBC One and BBC Radio 3 on Wednesday 5th July.
